I’d been with men all my life, and I’d never fallen in love with a woman. Then, when she and her girlfriend, education activist Christine Marinoni, were living happily together, and Nixon had just been told that the Sex and the City movie was going ahead, a routine mammogram detected cancer.
“It wasn’t a happy moment, but my mother, who is alive and well, has had breast cancer twice,” she says. Far from seeing it as a death sentence, she saw it as a health problem which, if treated, had a good chance of going away.
