Webcams are almost always attached to devices that are themselves connected to the internet, thus making them easy prey for hackers.
Over the past few years there have been numerous reports of creeps watching women in their homes via the camera in their PC or laptop.
These images are all from the short film, “Webcam,” created by Zbros Productions.
The film was inspired by the real-life case of a 31-year-old man, who, according to the FBI, “used malicious code to infect and control the computers of his victims.” After gaining access, he downloaded images and used them to blackmail his victims to get more illicit videos and photos from them.
The first thing Scott says you should do is immediately cover your camera with a plaster or something, so the perpetrators can’t watch you anymore.
Then – and it gets a tad more complicated – you need to temporarily set up firewall rules to block audio and video traffic.
He says you should ‘regularly update and patch devices, drivers and applications’ to make sure you’re protecting your device.
It depends on what software is turning it on in the first place. Usually, you turn off the 'cam by stopping the software that turned it on.
‘More technical indicators that are more difficult to obfuscate include the transmission of audio or video traffic from the device, the presence of running webcam processes and services, audio and video storage files and logs.’ Cleaning your devices up when they’ve been compromised is even trickier – but it’s do-able.
We don’t mean to unduly alarm you, but unsecured cameras on your computer could provide a malicious hacker with a direct window into your life.
And once they’ve watched you for long enough, chances are they’ll try their luck blackmailing you with something they’ve seen.
In this feature we’ll explain the dangers of having an internet connected camera staring at you all the time and the practical steps that can be taken to protect yourself by disabling your webcam. Being able to keep in touch with friends and family all around the world while avoiding extortionate international call rates is still an unappreciated marvel of the modern world.
But as Spiderman once taught us, with great power comes great responsibility.
